Lauren won the Undergraduate Youth Environmental Award presented by Coca-Cola Canada for proposing a waste management initiative, relating to the clean technology sector, that municipalities can implement as one way to mitigate the effects of climate change.

It’s International Coastal Cleanup month!! We showed up to clean up at Cherry Beach with The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

We ran for the Oceans with Adidas and Parley!!


The United Nations is considering an international agreement for plastic pollution. A working group meeting was held in Nairobi this summer and we participated.

Our lab led a clean-up along the Don River in collaboration with TRCA and Shoreline Cleanup, and in coordination with Paddle The Don. Read about it here.

Jack and Hayley’s project, measuring the effectiveness of mitigation strategies for decreasing microfiber emissions, is highlighted here in UofT News. Congrats Jack and Hayley and great work!!

Clara’s undergraduate paper, Urban river contaminants: A case-study comparison and its use in developing custom remediation techniques, has been Highly Commended in the Earth and Envrionmental Sciences category of the Undergraduate Awards Programmed 2017! She’s now in the running for Global Winner of this category :). Congrats Clara!!!

Clara is back from the Arctic, where we were sampling this summer for microplastics. It was an amazing adventure and great experience on the CCGS Amundsen. Read about some of her journey in the Varsity and Washington Post!

Edie Guo presented her research at the CGCS research day!! She has spent the summer developing methods to extract microplastics from sediments. Great work Edie!

Chelsea gave a speech at the March for Science in Toronto on April 22nd, 2017 (Earth Day!).


Monina presents her exciting research from her ROP 299 demonstrating that cormorants from Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are contaminated with microplastic debris.  This work is in collaboration with our colleagues Kim Fernie and Shane de Solla at Environment and Climate Change Canada. And look, her outfit matches her poster – she’s thought of everything!!!


Minister Glen Murray came to visit my class (EEB208H1 – Ecosystems and the Human Footprint) and gave a fantastic and engaging presentation!


Clara wins an NSERC USRA for the summer!! CONGRATS Clara!


Chelsea participated in an Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations Headquarters on February 14th, 2017. She provided a statement about the state of the science on plastic pollution and how the science can inform solutions.
